Narraganset Bay Applauds Field’s Point Wastewater Plant

Narraganset Bay Applauds Field’s Point Wastewater Plant

The National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) recently hosted its Utility Leadership and Annual Meeting in Providence.  It was also a celebration of NACWA’s 45th anniversary.  NACWA’s recent conference examined the concept known as the “city of the future,” the right balance between sustainable rates and affordability concerns.  The Narragansett Bay Water Quality District Commission was formed in 1980. The Commission is to maintain a leadership role in the protection and enhancement of water quality in Narragansett Bay and its tributaries by providing safe and reliable wastewater collection and treatment services to its customers at a reasonable cost. Today, the Narragansett Bay Commission owns and operates Rhode Island’s two largest wastewater treatment plants along with an extensive infrastructure of interceptors, pump stations, tide gates and combined sewers. One of the wastewater treatment plants under the Commission’s domain is the Field’s Point Wastewater Treatment Facility. Constructed in 1901 and reconstructed in the 1980s, “Field’s Point” provides secondary treatment for flows of up to 77 million gallons per day (MGD).  Field’s Point facility has won many other awards for design, operations, maintenance, energy management and safety. Field’s Point treats wastewater from four Rhode Island communities, including the capital city of Providence, and many of the sewer lines transporting flow to the facility date back to the mid-19th century. The Narraganset Bay Commission (NBC) brought online a 65-million gallon capacity deep rock tunnel to store CSO flows. The three-mile long, 300-ft deep tunnel captures and stores storm-related flow and pumps the flow to Field’s Point for treatment. The tunnel is the centerpiece of the first phase of the NBC’s three-phase comprehensive long term control plan for CSOs. In the six years since the tunnel has been in operation, the NBC has captured and treated more than 6.6 billion gallons of CSO...

North Smithfield Sewer Commission

North Smithfield Sewer Commission

Residents of North Smithfield, did you know you have a sewer commission working on your behalf? The committee was enacted to provide sewer services with the Town of North Smithfield. They will have responsibility for the construction, alteration, repair, maintenance and operation relating to the functions and services within its jurisdiction as defined in the Public Laws of Rhode Island of 1973. If interested in seeking appointment to the organization, you may submit an application to the town clerk.  The sewer commission shall consist of five members each a qualified elector of the town, appointed by the town council for a term of five years. Most recently the Sewer Commission worked on an assessment project and submitted recommendations for sewer assessment methods, as well as, fee structure.  In making their analysis there were many factors to consider such as the planned rate of sewer expansion, the current infrastructure make-up, composition and age of the sewer system, and the economic condition of the users of the potential sewer system.  The final recommendation of the commission was to offer any person who, with the approval of the board and town council, pays any portion of the cost of installing or repairing a sewer in a street or highway bordering their property and who agrees to convey all of the right, title, and interest in such sewer to the town may apply to the board for a credit against his sewer assessment for the value of the work which was financed. Duckling and the Block Island Sewer Plant

Duckling and the Block Island Sewer Plant

Every once in a while something gets into the sewer system that doesn’t belong there. As was the case with Franklin the duckling. Thankfully, he was pulled to safety when workers from the Block Island Sewer Plant recently discovered him (and 8 other ducklings) in the filtering system with no immediate plans of escaping. Residents reported witnessing a mother and her ducklings lingering near the clarifier days before only to notice the ducklings out of site. One may be reminiscent of the book ‘Are You My Mother?’ right about now. Fortunately, all ducklings were pulled to safety. All but one-Franklin. No worries, the story ends on a high note. The sewer plant workers were able to rescue the lone duckling and he has since been adopted by the Early Learning Center on the Island. A happy ending! Block Islanders, get ready for the 7th annual ‘Taste of Block Island’. This is an opportune time to enjoy the beaches, tourist attractions, shopping, great food and comradery. This ‘off the beaten track’ scenic town in Rhode Island has much to offer. Rainy Season and Sewer Drainage Systems

Many of us are experiencing a rainy season now that summer is in full swing.  Along with the sunny delights and fanfare this time of year brings, there is also a need to think about the proper functioning of our drainage systems where we live.  It is important to know to what extent a drainage issue is prevalent.  In order to do this, a qualified fully licensed professional is needed for drain pipe cleaning. This will also maximize your awareness of the health of the pipelines in your home.  Here are a few suggestions when seeking the help of an expert: 1. Get referrals from people you know.  Word of mouth advertising speaks volumes on the overall satisfaction of previous jobs. 2. Check for a license to operate within your state. 3. Avondale Gets Upgrade in Sewer

Avondale Gets Upgrade in Sewer

With the summer season here, inevitably, and hopefully in some areas, there is rain.  What makes it tough for our sewer systems is when there is too much rain all at once.  This month Avondale experienced an overflow in part, due to an antiquated system of collection for runoff ground water.  The City plans to rectify this by installing larger, connected pipes which will be tied in directly to the main line in Zanesville. Residents of Avondale gear up for this replacement, as it will be approximately 10 months for the project to be completed.  This newer, more efficient gravity sewer is planned as a conventional upgrade.  The older system was installed in the 1980’s with smaller, less capable sewers.  As the population grows, the underground infrastructure must grow with it. It is fairly common not to think of such issues until they become problematic.  That’s where Perma-Liner Industries comes in.  We have developed our Cured in Place pipeline rehabilitation system and have been using advanced trenchless technologies since 1999.  Call us or go online to www.perma-liner.com to discover how we can help you as a homeowner.     Save the Date!
